Change Management | Self Development | Leadership Mastery

A picture of a wall full of sticky post it notes. The words Goal Setting with a question mark are on top of it.

Leadership Series: the 5D Framework

The 5D Framework is a model for personal development and goal achievement that encompasses the five key components of progressive goal setting: Drive, Discipline, Development, Direction, and Destination. Each “D” represents a crucial aspect of an individual’s journey toward self-improvement. Growth isn’t a solo journey. As you rise, you lift those around you. By applying the 5D Framework, you create a ripple effect of progress, shaping both your future and the future of those you influence. This is a foundational model that once applied, creates change in your life and its outcome through this reinforcing cycle.

The 5D Framework has changed quite a bit over the years as I have worked on it. Most recently, I have created a workbook model for the implementation of the framework in entry and senior level teams.

Three factors

Internal

These are movements that you create within yourself. They manifest as motivation, routines, efforts, and so much more. The fire that you create is the catalyst of change moving forward.

External

These are often materials or mentorship. This is where skill development and progression come from.

Forward

Propulsion and initiative to move. These factors are the drivers of the framework that carry you towards the life-changing end goal.

Internal Factors

Drive: Inspiring ideas that fuel your passion and keep you moving

Prompt: If you had unlimited energy, what would you wake up excited to do every day? What’s stopping you from starting now?

Action: Complete a “Passion Audit”. Draw a two-column list, on the left, list at least 10 activities that energize and excite you. On the right, list 10 activities that drain your energy. Highlight the top three from the left that align with your goals or Destination. Highlight the bottom three from the right and ask yourself how you can mitigate these. Check this box when you have completed this.

Discipline: Consistent actions that push you forward

Prompt: Every habit you have is either building your future or breaking it down. Which habit do you need to take control of today?

Action: Identify one habit that, if consistently followed for the next 30 days, would bring you closer to your Destination. Write it down, define how you’ll track it and review it often. Look up time blocking.

External Factor

Development: Tools, training, and knowledge that accelerate your growth

Prompt: Growth doesn’t happen in isolation. What book, mentor, or experience is challenging the way you think and pushing you to the next level? If you are missing this reach out to a leader about mentorship today.

Action: Dedicate time each week to deepening your knowledge in your field through books, podcasts, or online resources that directly support your ambitions. Set boundaries around your time to ensure you’re using it effectively for self-improvement rather than wasting it on unproductive habits.

Forward Factors

Direction: A Focused plan that turns your effort into measurable progress

Prompt: Clarity comes from action, not waiting. What’s one small decision you can make today to move forward?

Action: Action: Think of a long-term goal you want to achieve in the next few years. Work backward by identifying the major milestones you must hit each year, then break those milestones into quarterly and monthly targets. Present your roadmap to a partner and refine it based on feedback.

Destination: Clear goals that define your success and transform your life.

Prompt: If your life were a book, would you be proud of this chapter? What can you do today to improve on the next one?

Action: Write a letter to your future self, dated one year from today. Describe the achievements, mindset, and progress you hope to have made by then. Seal it and set a reminder to open it in one year to assess your journey.
